My Rats

The best rat I ever had was "Cheddar". She was a beautiful black and white Chinese lab rat, that my biology teacher let me have when the school year was over. Once, I rescued a mouse from the cage of the snake before he could be dinner, and carried him around the rest of the day in my pocket. When I put him in the cage with Cheddar, he was adopted right away, and treated as her own son. They slept together, and shared food and water, they played together. I named him Jalepeño.
My friend, Megan, moved away at the end of her senior year, and left me her evil rat, Japhet. He lived in his own cage, and wasn't very good about socializing with anyone. I tried to play with him, but he was a biter, and had a bitter disposition.
Cheddar died one afternoon, after suffering from a massive tumor on her side, that just pulled down her skin, and looked very uncomfortable. It was horrible. Jalepeño was alone and frightened.
One night, I came home late from playing Photon with my friends, and Japhet's cage was empty. I found him standing in Jalepeño's cage, with blood all over his mouth, and Jalepeño's body was lying there, headless.
I stopped loving Japhet that day. He was fed, and given water, but I never tried to hold him or talk to him again. That fucker lived for 2 or 3 years.
