New York in November

Being from Texas, I have no idea how to shop for a warm winter coat.

What kind of coat is warm enough for November in New York City? Which is warmer, wool or down? Will I need a long coat?

Any other advise for traveling in the North in the Winter?

Keep in mind that I am a skinny Texas girl who gets very cold, very easy.
